Nyquil works for me, because it puts me to sleep. Try eating if you can. I always make a trip to the store when I start to feel sick and stock up on things that a sick person would have no trouble eating. Yogurt/jello/soup all go well. Also, get some exercise where possible. I still go to work when I'm sick and get better faster, I think, as a result of the exercise.

Perhaps the best and cheapest way to combat cold is steam inhalation. Steam helps in unblocking the congested nose. The temperature generated by the steam in nose region retards the growth of cold causing virus. Adding eucalyptus/basil leaves in water that is required for steaming makes the process wonder.
