Depressed mothers, depressed kids.
Children whose mothers are depressed are twice as likely to be depressed themselves. Apart from depression, such children are also more likely to have significant problems with social skills and personal relationships in comparison to depressed children of non-depressed mothers.
Those with maternal history of depression have fewer friends. They are also more insecure with other people and more negative about their social lives overall. Daughters, in particular, were involved in more significant conflicts with others. Depression is not only debilitating to the person but to the family as well. These children are probably affected by their mother’s difficulties with social relationships.
